Checked on the Highbridge Park/Swindler Cove hawk nesting site very late Sunday afternoon. Last year's (second) nest is still there and there's no sign of a new nest being built elsewhere, but the resident hawks, George and Martha, were nowhere in sight.
The day wasn't a complete bust, however. Twenty minutes after sunset as I was headed for the subway, a red-tail popped up over Broadway between 190th and 192nd St. It circled about a half dozen times as it worked to gain some altitude, and then finally it sailed off to the west.
