6/7, St. John the Divine

Nestlings - 3131

Every visit to the red-tailed hawk nest at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine seems to show another step in the development of the growing nestlings. Monday was the first sign of tawny breast feathers, Wednesday the eldest was showing some dark head feathers, and Friday eldest was showing even more dark head feathers. Youngest's head still looked pretty white and fuzzy, but that will change in a day or two.

Let's take another look at eldest's darkening pate.

When I first got to the area on Friday evening, mama was perched on the cathedral roof on the archangel's horn. Papa showed up moments later, delivering food to the nest.

Mama then took off for a bit. She returned to the nest a half hour later to feed the kids.
